As dog lovers, we all know of that one dog that loves to jump into puddles, run into the sea or even attempt the smelliest of countryside ditches… my Golden Retriever, Mr. Blue, is one of the latter!
Waterproof dog collars are the way forward!
Instead of getting home and wondering how you’re going to clean your dog’s collar and dry it before your dog’s next toilet break or walk, why not invest in a waterproof collar that is designed for practicality, cleanliness and hygiene. Better yet… its dry within seconds of washing!
Biothane is a non-toxic material that can withstand high temperatures, humid conditions and won’t hold onto bacteria, like your fabric or leather collars, which can of course be bad for dogs if it is located near to their eyes, nose or mouth.
Bacteria is naturally present in a whole host of environments, which if they enter the body through the nose, mouth or eyes can lead to health implications. For instance, the most common type of bacteria that causes illness in dogs is Staphylococcus aureus, which can potentially cause infections in dogs. Waterproof collars will not totally prevent bacteria from entering your dog’s body, but they do decrease the risk of this happening due to their waterproof/repellent nature, when compared to other collar materials.
Collar chafing is a big problem with many fabric collars as it primarily occurs when a wet collar is left on the hair/skin, this can cause skin irritations, hair loss, redness or in worst cases the skin looks like it has suffered from rope burn – this can also occur with an ill-fitting collar!
This is why we would suggest removing your dog’s collar (if it is safe to do so) and letting the hair/skin dry out before placing it back on! A waterproof collar will help in this instance, if you need to keep a collar on, you can quickly wipe over the collar to remove any bacteria that may be sitting on the surface (we would also recommend trying to dry the hair around the neck), meaning that if irritation does occur, bacteria is less likely to agitate the already irritated skin!
